The degree programme Education Studies at Heidelberg University focusses on professionalisation processes in education studies as well as learning and change processes for individuals and education institutions and organisations.
The Bachelor’s degree programme in Education Studies provides students with a comprehensive overview of the specialised aspects and theoretical fundamentals of education. Students will obtain the skills and knowledge necessary both for the professional design of educational and learning processes as well as for the development of parameters for learning and education processes within society at large or in institutions and organisations. During the course of studies, the methodological and research-theoretical fundamentals of empirical Education Studies will be established.
Following completion of their studies, students will have acquired basic education studies knowledge in the areas of: Child-raising, socialisation and education, teaching and learning, instruction, counselling, and innovation. In addition, they will learn to correctly apply scholarly work methods and, through internships, have the opportunity to gain practical experience. Students will learn to derive scholarly-based judgements, to formulate their opinions on the basis of specialised knowledge and be able to defend these opinions. They will also display competence in participating in transdisciplinary dialogue in the areas of child-raising, socialisation, and education.
Students may select from options for interest-based specialisation, acquire cross-disciplinary skills, and may use innovative teaching and examination formats both in their own teaching and to complete course work (Journal Club, poster presentations, project work). Many of the department’s instructors are currently active practitioners, allowing students to establish a network for future professional activities. Graduates of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Education Studies find employment in client-centred and organisation-centred positions, as well as positions in competence and knowledge acquisition and generation. They are also qualified to continue their education with a Master’s degree programme in Education Studies.
