The Translation Studies for Information Technologies degree programme focusses on the translation of German texts into English and vice-versa, with particular emphasis on the technological aspects. A second area of the curriculum consists of Information technology and engineering science.

The Bachelor’s degree programme in Translation and communication technologies is offered by the Heidelberg University Institute of Translation and Interpreting in collaboration with the faculties of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences.

Graduates will have obtained the following career-related competencies:

Theoretical and practical competencies required for the expert translation of sophisticated technical texts in the areas of computer science, IT, communications technology, building automation, and automation technology.
Skills necessary for the preparation of a research-based Bachelor’s thesis, particularly in the area of linguistics and translation.
Foreign language and intercultural skills in both German and English, as well as a possible third language (French or Spanish).
Hands-on experience in working with media technology including terminology databases, localisation tools, and programmes or tools used for corpus analysis and the preparation of professional and marketable translations as well as for other work with texts (documentation, proof-reading, post-editing);
Comprehensive communications skills that will enable graduates to successfully present and convey specialist knowledge to fellow experts and lay persons alike.
Cross-disciplinary competencies: personal and professional skills and supplemental qualifications.
Interdisciplinary competencies gained both from the instruction provided by the degree programme as well as from opportunities for attending courses or lectures in the life sciences, medicine, sociology, law, and/or economics.

Courses are held in both Heidelberg and in Mannheim:

Introductory and advanced courses in translation theory and methods in the two languages of study, English and German, are held at Heidelberg University, Practical translation classes are also held in Heidelberg.
The courses held at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences are primarily engineering courses. There, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of digital data transmission as well as applications in the areas of process and production automation and digital technology.

Admission Requirements

If applicants cannot present a German language certificate with their application, they must pass the DSH examination at Heidelberg University, with a minimum score of DSH-2.
If the applicant’s foreign higher-education entrance qualification (Baccalauréat, GCE - A & O-Levels, etc.) is found to be equivalent to the German higher-education entrance qualification (usually Abitur), the international applicant can be directly admitted to the university, if not the applicant will be required to pass an assessment test.
