The general objective of the program is to develop scientific knowledge in the theories and applications of psychological and social processes that underlie teaching and learning.

The program is suitable for individuals working or planning to follow a career as educators. Educational psychology as an academic discipline is broadly defined as the study of learners, learning and teaching. Studies in educational psychology can inform the work of individuals working or wishing to work as educators in primary, secondary or tertiary education. It can provide the basic theoretical foundations to inform their teaching practice in order to improve student learning outcomes and help all students become the best they can be at an academic and personal level. A successful teacher is able to motivate students, manage the classroom, assess student’s prior knowledge, communicate ideas effectively, address individual student needs, develop appropriate teaching strategies and implement suitable assessment procedures. Teachers can develop these skills through understanding and applying relevant psychological and learning theories. The program aims at inviting educators see themselves as engaged learners, i.e. professionals who continuously seek to find and test better ways to help their students succeed. The central aim of this program is to enrich students’ understanding of how development (typical and atypical) and individual differences affect learning, as well as developing critical thinking in evaluating the appropriateness of teaching methods aiming at improving student learning. Another aim is to train students in the use of methodological and statistical tools in the investigation of contemporary issues of relevance to educational psychology.

Admission Criteria

Applications for admission to the program are only assessed from candidates who meet the minimum entry criteria, as outlined below:

  • A degree in Psychology, Education or another related field from a recognized university (e.g. from America, Europe or another recognized equivalent qualification), with a GPA of 0 (American Degrees) or Upper Second Class Division Honors (British Degrees) or 6.5 (Greek Universities).
  • English Language Proficiency – Students meet the English language requirement if their first degree was in English. Otherwise, a TOEFL score of 550 on the paper or 213 on the electronic test, or a GCSE “O” Level with a “C” or an IELTS score of 6.5 or a placement grade in ENGL-100 based on the University of Nicosia examination is required.

In addition to the above, the final admission decision to the program also weighs the following elements: performance in a personal interview, previous educational and research experience, statement of personal goals and research interests, other relevant postgraduate qualifications in Psychology, and recommendations.
