The Postgraduate Program offers quality training to clergy and laity, theologians, and teachers, as the subject of Religious Studies is also taught in primary education, to philologists and graduates of the humanities and social sciences, and to University graduates of other specialties. The purpose of the Postgraduate Program is education, interdisciplinary training in a modern learning framework of Orthodox Theology and the preparation of scientists who will be able to contribute effectively to the work of the Church, will staff secondary education, and will work as researchers or members of Teaching and Research Staff in modern fields of theological science in Universities in Cyprus, Greece, and abroad, as well as in various research centers.

During the postgraduate studies, the field of biblical studies, church history, as well as the field of pedagogy, philosophy of education and Christian pedagogy is studied. The research also includes the field of patristic and hagiological studies and is carried out within the framework of the study of patristic literature and theology on the basis of the works of the great Fathers of the Church, the Saints of Cyprus Epiphanius and Neophytos the Enclesti, as well as modern Saints. At the same time, the research also concerns the study and examination of older and modern religious currents, with particular emphasis on Islam and issues of interreligious dialogue. Emphasis is placed on the field of pastoral theology, in order to train, especially the clergy and laity, in the pastoral, catechetical and missionary work of the Church, with a parallel examination of modern sociology and ethics, for addressing social, ethical, bioethical and ecological problems. The dogmatic teaching of the Orthodox Church is studied, in relation to inter-Orthodox and inter-Christian dialogues. The study also concerns Christian worship, hymnology and Christian archaeology and art. Within the framework of canonical and ecclesiastical law, the relations between Church and State are clarified in connection with the existing constitutional framework and the modern Statutory Legislation of the Churches of Cyprus and Greece. Studies are completed with the preparation of a postgraduate thesis, which is a necessary prerequisite for obtaining the Master's Degree in Theology.

The objectives of the Postgraduate Study Program are:

  • the promotion of scientific research, interdisciplinary, interdepartmental, interuniversity and transnational
  • the training of specialized personnel for the Church, education, social welfare and culture
  • the theoretical and practical interconnection of Theology and society in the context of promoting domestic and international scientific research in cognitive areas of contemporary Theology and the use of new methods and ways of thinking to solve practical problems of the Church and society
  • ensuring a framework for cooperation between theological schools both domestically and abroad to promote inter-Orthodox, inter-Christian, inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue


Employment opportunities

The title of the Master of Science (MSc) of the Department of Theology and Culture of the University of Nicosia is recognized by the competent Departments of the Republic of Cyprus and the Hellenic Republic and the member countries of the European Union. Holders of this degree may:

  • to undertake scientific work in research centers or universities, public and private, in Cyprus, Greece and abroad
  • to be employed in relevant sectors of the Metropolises of the Church of Cyprus, Greece and other Orthodox Churches or to be appointed as representatives and advisors of the said Churches in inter-Orthodox, inter-church and inter-religious dialogues
  • to work in tourism offices, as tour guides or specialized associates, in matters of promoting religious tourism in Cyprus and Greece
  • to work in the field of education or catechesis of expatriate Orthodox Christians abroad

Admission Requirements

Admission criteria for postgraduate students

For inclusion and admission to the Postgraduate Study Program, candidates must submit the following supporting documents:
  1. Completed application form
  2. Certified copy of ID card or passport (personal information page and photo)
  3. Curriculum vitae
  4. A certified copy of a degree in Theological Studies or Departments of other Schools in Greece or of equivalent recognized Institutions abroad (along with the equivalence of DOATAP or KISATS for degrees from foreign HEIs). The application of each candidate must be accompanied by his/her degree, while in the event of a delayed oath-taking, it is accompanied by a certified copy of the detailed transcript, which is immediately replaced with the copy of the degree.
  5. Certified copy of detailed score
  6. Two letters of recommendation either from Professors and/or employers
  7. Personal goals note
  8. Certificate of proficiency in a foreign language


Candidates will be evaluated through a personal interview before the competent Committee of the Department of Theology.



Graduate admission

  • Graduates of Orthodox Theological Schools and Higher Ecclesiastical Academies and graduates of Departments of other Schools in Greece or of similar recognized institutions abroad are admitted to the Postgraduate Studies Program (along with the equivalence of DOATAP or KYSATS for degrees from foreign HEIs). Graduates are also considered those who have proven grades in all courses, but have not yet been sworn in.
  • The annual number of admissions may not exceed sixty-four (64) postgraduate students, eight (8) students per thematic unit. By decision of the General Assembly of the Department of Theology, the number of admissions may be increased or decreased. Also, by decision of the General Assembly of the Department of Theology, it is possible to allocate vacant positions in one thematic unit to another thematic unit, provided that there is a surplus number of postgraduate students who meet the requirements and if this is assessed as necessary.
  • Students of the Postgraduate Studies Program are registered in a special Departmental Register and their attendance is mandatory.


Selection criteria for postgraduate students


A prerequisite for graduates to be accepted as candidates is:

  • have a very good knowledge of the Greek language. Candidates who do not have a certificate of very good knowledge of the Greek language are invited to declare in their application that they wish to be examined in the English language.
  • to know one of the following languages: a. English, b. French or c. German. Knowledge of the foreign language is certified by the submitted accompanying documents, as defined on the basis of the “Revised list of acceptable criteria by the Public Service Commission for knowledge of the Greek, English, French and German languages ​​at levels required by public service plans”
