This course draws on the School’s considerable research reputation and professional expertise The Masters by Research in Art & Design offers an exciting new opportunity for students to study at Masters level, follow an area of their own academic interest and under the supervision of published experts in their fields. You will be able pursue topics from - and across - painting, photography, performance, film and video, sculpture, installations, public art and printmaking. You will be supported by some of the most dynamic artists and researchers in the School. Alongside the development of your creative studio work you will gain an understanding of key aspects of art history and theory, as well as an awareness of the social and institutional context within which artworks exist. On completion you will have written an extended research dissertation or produced a practical portfolio of work, each amounting to an outcome of sustained engagement with your topic. You will be supported and advised throughout by your supervising tutor who will guide you through an agreed schedule of activities, building towards the final assessed piece of work which with the opportunity to be exhibited and publicised in a group MA exhibition.

Students will have a good degree in a relevant subject field. All applicants must submit an initial “Proposal for Study” upon which the learning contract can be agreed as a condition of admission. Sample research proposal - English Literature. For students applying from Wales, Scotland, Ireland and the rest of Europe, we gladly accept equivalent qualifications. Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS score of 6 with minimum 5.5 in all 4 skills, or an equivalent qualification.
