The BA History of Art with Film is for those who are passionate about the visual arts and the study of film; it is also ideal for those who are interested in a career in the broad area of arts, media and cultural industries. This course covers a wide range of Western art, from the Parthenon to performance art, and film history and theory from film's beginnings to the present day. Students will develop their understanding of works of visual and film culture in their historical context, enhance their skills of visual perception and critical analysis of texts and of still and moving images, and be introduced to the current approaches to the discipline. Students will learn to research the cultural and historical contexts in which art and film has been produced and write confidently and analytically about images, films and texts. The first-year modules are intended to provide students with academic skills and a good grounding in the discipline. As the students progress through the course, they may explore different types of visual culture in more detail.
