The undergraduate education period in the environmental engineering department is 4 years. Graduates of environmental engineering are given the title of "Environmental Engineer". Environmental engineering is a branch of engineering related to the use of natural resources and the creation of environmental conditions suitable for human health. Unlike other engineering branches, it is an engineering branch that does not try to consume the resources of nature but tries to give back to nature what it has.
In the first year of environmental engineering education, basic courses such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology are taught. Starting from the second year of education, basic operations, drinking water treatment and application, wastewater treatment and application, noise, water and air pollution and similar courses are taught that will provide the professional knowledge and skills required by environmental engineering. There are courses and application studies such as environmental chemistry, environmental microbiology, computer usage, development and best use of hydraulic, air, water and soil resources, control and prevention of pollution; designing systems for rendering solid, liquid and gaseous waste harmless to the environment using both conventional and advanced techniques. The department requires summer internships, including office internships and business internships. The environmental engineering department consists of two main branches: environmental sciences and environmental technologies.
The main fields of study for environmental engineers are water and wastewater treatment, air pollution control, solid waste disposal and soil pollution. The main field of activity of Environmental Engineering, which is a branch of "engineering", is to research technological solutions for the disposal of wastes mixed with water, air and soil and to determine the measures to be applied. In the treatment projects implemented for the treatment of these wastes, which mostly originate from industrial facilities, the branches of machinery, construction, chemistry and biology are also used. The design, construction and operation of domestic and industrial wastewater treatment plants, water networks, transmission lines, and the design and construction of sewage plants can be listed as the subjects that environmental engineers are most interested in.
Most environmental engineers can work as planners in public institutions such as the Ministry of Public Works and Settlement, Ministry of Culture, Transportation, Industry and Trade, General Directorate of Highways, DSI, Bank of Provinces, municipalities, Ministries of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Affairs. There is a great need for environmental engineers in the Central and Provincial Organizations of the Ministry of Health and the General Directorate of Environment, which is affiliated to the Prime Ministry. Private employees can carry out research and planning work for the public institutions, municipalities or individuals and companies mentioned above, and prepare city development plans put out to tender by the Bank of Provinces and municipalities. In addition, there are various job opportunities in the fields of transportation, historical environment, natural environment and tourism planning, depending on the subjects they specialize in.
