The Department of Applied Mathematics was founded in 1972. Its Master and Doctorate degree programs were started in 1977 and 1984, respectively. The Graduate Institute of Mathematical Modeling and Scientific Computations, hosted by the department, is recently established in 2006. The Department currently has 30 full time faculty members. Their enthusiasm for mathematics motivates the Department's progress in teaching and research. Their interests cover major areas of theoretical and applied mathematics (analysis, combinatorics, differential equations, differential geometry, dynamical systems, financial mathematics, mathematical physics, probability theory, and scientific computation). Students find the faculty members' expert knowledge a great resource.

The curriculum is designed in such a way that both theoretical and applied aspects of mathematics are emphasized. First and second year undergraduates are required to learn the fundamental topics including calculus, mathematical thinking, linear algebra, advanced calculus, differential equations. The upper level undergraduates may pursue either more theoretical courses, or they may choose among applied programs such as computer science, financial mathematics, statistics and engineering related areas. They can combine a variety of options with their own interests. Apart from the possibility of double majors and complementary minors, they may also enter programs in interdisciplinary science, education, computer software, library information, or financial engineering etc.

Over the years, the Department's graduates have had excellent performances in many careers. Some pursue teaching and research in mathematics, statistics, information science, while others entered the industries of computers, finance, insurance and other high tech companies. The graduates apply what they have learned to achieve career satisfaction and thus contribute to the advance of mankind and society, which is the common goal of the Department's faculty and students.
