The elementary education program is designed for students who have undergraduate degrees in fields other than education and who aspire to transform elementary schools in the pursuit of social justice. The requirements for the Illinois Type 03 teaching certificate for grades kindergarten through 9 are integrated with the program. However, additional courses must be taken to earn an endorsement to teach at the middle school level. To be awarded the MA in elementary education, students must successfully complete a 36 semester hour program of study, and all requirements for the teaching license. 33 semester hours of education courses are required for the license; students may earn the license prior to completing the MA degree. They will be highly qualified to teach children from grades K-9. Students in the elementary education program have the opportunity to work with children in a variety of settings to insure that they are prepared for the diverse and challenging world of today?s schools upon graduation.
