This program is a four-year professional degree program (differing from a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, which is more general). The Bachelor of Music program is oriented toward development of a high level of musical achievement in a specialized area. Around 75 percent (90 hours) of the degree study involves music coursework: lessons, ensembles, musicianship and music history, along with specialized courses in each major area. In these courses, students acquire the knowledge and skills that will form the foundation for work in the professional music world. Because it is important for musicians to make connections between music and other fields of study, students also take about 30 hours in areas such as English composition, foreign language, visual arts, history, or psychology. The program in composition requires 126 semester hours. It is designed to develop technique and an expressive voice in students with creative ability. After graduation, several composition students have gone on to masters and doctoral degrees in universities around the country. Recent graduates have gone composition programs at Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Colorado at Boulder, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
