This program is a full time, two-year program of concentrated, advanced study in a specialized area of creative pursuit. Students in CCPA's Master of Music program are fully immersed in their chosen area of study through private lessons and coaching, performing ensembles, and seminars, developing professional competence and the capacity to make effective artistic and intellectual judgments. This highly selective program is open to students majoring in a woodwind or brass instrument, harp, or percussion. In order to be considered for acceptance to the program, students must demonstrate significant familiarity with, and accomplishment in, orchestral excerpts and repertory. This program is offered to train orchestral performers to the highest professional standards. CCPA is uniquely positioned to offer this program, having more than 25 members of the Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera orchestras on the faculty half of whom are principals. It is a goal of the Orchestral Studies Program that students will develop a broad familiarity with the expectations of a professional life in music. Orchestral studies students participate in a series of seminars presented by faculty and visiting artists. These cover a wide variety of topics of importance to professional life, including etiquette, ethics, orchestral life (committees, contracts, etc.), physical and psychological aspects of injury prevention, and career promotion.
