The Department of Medicine has contributed to medical research with a doctoral studies programme since 1986-87 which has continued uninterruptedly to date. Research tradition in this department is reflected in the numerous doctoral theses that have been read. The PhD programme in Medicine embraces three areas of knowledge that are worked on by the research teams:

  • Medicine
  • Radiology and Physical Medicine
  • Dermatology
These areas have lines of research that include the most important aspects of the classroom and research syllabus. Although years ago there was the prevailing idea that doctoral studies formed a period of postgraduate training and their objective was to obtain the PhD degree, currently the PhD programme is thought of as a period of training in which the most important thing is not acquiring new knowledge as such but the scientific method and necessary skills for the PhD candidate to begin a research project tutored by academics whose own research curriculum has demonstrated that they are qualified to train new researchers. In that way it is possible to identify specific fundamental objectives in the PhD programme:

  • Training researchers
  • Carrying out a research project
  • Doctoral thesis
