The design of this PhD programme in Spanish Studies is the result of several contextual factors, from the most obvious, such as the requirements to adapt to the Royal Decree 99/2011, which regulates doctoral studies, to the teaching and research history and tradition of the Department of Spanish Studies that is offering it. Since the department was founded in 1968 some leading figures in Hispanic arts have occupied its classrooms, with writers such as  Cristina Peri Rossi and Nobel Prize winner Nobel Mario Vargas Llosa, to leading scholars such as lecturers Sergio Beser, Alberto Blecua and Francisco Rico, the director of the Spanish Royal Academy, José Manuel Blecua, now retired but still active in the PhD programme. Next to them, other younger lecturers, several of whom form part of leading research groups and projects, contribute to making the department, and the faculty, one of the best in Spain. (See reports in El Mundo, in 2011 and 2012 that cite it as the best). In accordance with the  RD 99/2011, the programme was conceived precisely around those researchers, teams and their respective lines of research.
