History of The Program

The subdivision was established in 2013 to help increase the number of staff members in different social areas, and to educate researchers to serve in various institutions in the country. Research and education in the subdivision are divided into mean fields including economic development and international economics, economic theory, economic policy, and economic history.

Purpose of the Program

The main objective of the department is to provide qualified economists for positions both in the public and private sectors. Because of this, research and education in the department are divided into fields including Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, International Economics, Monetary Theory and Policy, Economic Policy, Economic Theory, Theories of Growth, Financial Markets, Finance, and Econometrics. In order to succeed in this department, students should have the ability to analytical thinking.

Program Learning Outcomes

With the successful completion of this program, students will be able to

  1. To be able to deepen the knowledge that gained in the same field or/and different field at the level of expertise by having comprehensive theoretical knowledge in his/her own field
  2. To be able to improve policy recommendations for the economic problems to increase the well-being of society by using comprehensive theoretical and applied knowledge that gained in his/her own field
  3. To be able to work effectively as a team member of a scientific research project
  4. To be able to prepare a seminar and present it in accordance with the scientific ethics and standards in his/her field
  5. To be able to write theses, reports, etc., present and publish them as an article in accordance with the scientific ethics and standards in his/her field.
  6. To be able to integrate the theoretical knowledge with the application in the field
  7. To be able to generate new knowledge by integrating the theoretical knowledge of the expertise level that is gained in the field with information that comes from different disciplines.
  8. To be able to critically evaluate information related to the field
  9. To be able to treat the studies of other disciplines, that are integrated with information in the field

Specific Admission Requirements

1 - Bachelor's Degree in acceptable fields,
2 - Sufficient score from the National Academic Staff & Graduate Education Exam (ALES)

Access to Further Studies

This program has a post-graduate program. Bachelors degree owners with 70 National Academic and Graduate Entry Examination (ALES) score and the level of graduation grade point average (GPA) decided by the Institute of the Social Sciences may apply to doctorate programs.

Graduation Requirements

The graduation requirements for the Department of Economics are the same as the qualification requirements and regulations. There is no additional requirement to secure the Master Degree provided that the students have passed all the courses in the curriculum with at least a CC grade, had a cumulative gross point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00, had a passing grade for the reports prepared for these placements.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates of this department work as 'economists' on making the best use of manpower, on raw material resources, and also on finding the best way of marketing products. Turkish Treasury, Undersecretariat of the Prime Ministry Foreign Trade, State Planning Organization, State Institute of Statistics, Ministry of Finance, Capital Market Board of Turkey, Turkish Competition Authority, and Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey such as state sector and private sector are the main areas of work for the graduates of this department.

Assessment and Grading

The examination, assessment, and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate and the Department of Economics is bound by these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam, a second mid-term exam composed of quizzes, homework, and assignments, and a final end-of-term exam, with contributions of 30%, 20%, and 50% respectively. The marking is made out of 100. Grades higher than 70 passed. The AA is the highest grade and has a grade credit of 4.00, BA 3.5, BB 3.0, CB 2.5, CC 2.0, DC 1.5, DD 1.0, FD 0.5 and FF 0.0. Grades of AA to CC are pass. The details given for each course in the program include the detailed assessment methods together with a description of the second mid-term exam.
