About Geology
Geology is the study of the earth, earth materials, and earth systems. It is a physical and natural science and is characterized by both resource and environmental facets. It deals with the situation of planet Earth within solar system, its physical and chemical characteristics, changes that earth has experienced since its initial formation. In addition, it includes the problems of surface and underground engineering, groundwater and geothermal energy development, and even evolution of creatures living on Earth. Geology also relates about earth history, origin of life, composition of earth crust, structural conditions and evolutions over the earth. Beside its theoretical dimension, Geology has numerous practically applied fields. Geologists (Earth scientists) have helped to determine the age of earth as approximately 4.6 billion years and identified a number of moving tectonic plates of earth lithosphere. They also find locations of earth’s natural resources and help to mining engineers in their process. Besides, they are interested in exploration and finding of precious rocks, jewels and many new minerals.
The Department of Geological Engineering at Gumuşhane University with its qualified academic people is among the reputable departments of geology training in Turkey. Academic staff of our department contributes to the understanding of geological problems of Eastern Black Sea Region with their works and projects.
