Gümüşhane University was established by Law No. 5765, which was published in the Official Gazette dated May 31, 2008 and numbered 26892. Subsequently, Gümüşhane University Faculty of Letters was established with the decision of the Council of Ministers numbered 2011/2471 published in the Official Gazette dated 03.01.2012 and numbered 28162 and continued its development with new departments. One of these newly established departments, the 'Department of Geography', was established in 2018 and started admitting students by opening the undergraduate program in the 2020-2021 academic year.
Our department will start to continue its education with the common department program in which there are three Departments named Physical Geography, Human and Economic Geography and Turkish Geography. Our Geography department, which has a multi-disciplinary structure; aims to equip its students with its modern understanding of science, methods and technologies.
Students who graduate from the department are given the title of "Geographer". Our graduates have worked with Mineral Research and Exploration Institute, State Hydraulic Works, Rural Services, General Directorate of Forestry, Highways, General Directorate of Meteorology, State Institute of Statistics, State Planning Organization etc. He can work in official institutions such as the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Environment. In addition, Geography, as an interdisciplinary field with the capacity to offer different career opportunities, is an interdisciplinary field for Geographers, education, environment and disaster management, city and regional planning, local and regional development, real estate, location selection in R&D, market research, etc. They can work in many different fields.
The main objectives of the Department of Geography can be summarized as follows:
1. To scientifically investigate the spatial and temporal relations with the natural processes in the physical environment;
2. To reveal the spatial and temporal characteristics of social and economic activities;
3. To examine the connections between human activities and natural systems;
The basic competencies that the Geography Department aims to provide to students are as follows;
1. Ensuring that they are trained as qualified geographers who have high research and questioning skills, who have national values, who can use scientific knowledge and research methods, as in Modern Geography departments,
2. Ensuring that they have the competence to present and interpret data with maps, photographs and databases and all kinds of figures and/or charts,
3. To raise the competency in the field of physical and human geography by increasing it on a global and regional scale,
4. To provide a modern understanding of the relationship between the natural environment and human systems,
5. Researching the effects on the natural environment in spatial and temporal dimensions and ensuring that they are adequately equipped for the analysis of social, human, economic and cultural processes are among the basic competencies.
The main courses offered within the scope of the Department of Geography Undergraduate Program are as follows:
General Courses: Introduction to Geography, Basic Statistics, Computer, Cartography, Map Information, Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing Techniques and Applications.
Physical Geography: Paleogeography, Geomorphological Processes, Fluvial Geomorphology, Structural Geomorphology, Karst Geomorphology, Volcano Geomorphology, Geomorphological Field Studies, Fundamentals of Climatology, Climatological Statistics and Data Analysis, Hydrography, Geology, Minerals and Rocks, Human and Environment, Ecology, Supra Resources Management, Erosion and Soil Conservation, Natural Disasters and Management, Environmental Issues, Environmental Impact Assessment.
