The Department of Civil Engineering, which commenced its services under the name of Civil Engineering at Karadeniz Technical University in the 1994-1995 academic year, was integrated into the Faculty of Engineering at Gümüşhane University, a newly established institution, starting from the year 2008. The Civil Engineering Department consists of five main areas: Geotechnical, Hydraulic, Mechanical, Transportation, and Structural Engineering. With a history of 28 years in education and instruction, the department introduced a part-time (evening) undergraduate program in 2009 and later, a Master's program, followed by a Doctorate program starting from the 2017-2018 Spring semester. The Civil Engineering Department continues its educational activities with an academic staff consisting of 5 Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 6 PhD instructors, 1 Lecturer, and 5 Research assistants.
Earned Degrees
Upon successful completion of the program and completion of the program qualifications, a Master's or PhD degree in civil engineering is obtained.
Terms of Admission
Acceptable score from the centralized Academic Staff and Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES).
Transition to the Upper Level
Graduates who have successfully completed the master's program can apply for doctoral programs both in their field and in their multidisciplinary fields, provided that they have obtained a valid grade from the ALES exam and have achieved English language proficiency.
Graduation Conditions
A master's degree in Civil Engineering to be able to take 21 credits (56 ECTS) the course must be passed with a grade of at least CC, and have achieved a weighted average of at least 2.0 out of 4.0 and prepare to succeed by offering a master's thesis in front of a jury is essential. In the doctorate program, for students admitted with a master's degree with thesis, it is required to be successful in at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least seven courses, seminar, proficiency exam, thesis proposal and thesis study, provided that a total of 21 credits and an education period is not less than 60 ECTS. For students admitted to the doctoral program with a bachelor's degree, it is required to be successful in at least 300 ECTS credits, including 14 courses of at least 42 credits, seminar, qualifying exam, thesis proposal and thesis study.
Graduate Employment Opportunities
Civil Engineers are employed in many fields related to their profession in the public and private sectors and can also establish their own businesses. The main areas where Civil Engineers can work can be listed as follows: Universities, research institutions and other public institutions, municipalities, project design and consultancy services, private companies, building inspection companies, contracting, aviation industry, energy sector, civil and environmental engineering joint applications, steel manufacturing and applications, building materials production and application areas, earthquake engineering, coastal-port structures, ship manufacturing sector, automotive and sub-industry, plumbing and natural gas systems design and manufacturing, automation and control systems design and manufacturing, military and defense industry, power plants.
Assessment and Evaluation
They are subjected to midterm and final exams for each course. The contribution of the midterm exam to the success grade is 40% and the contribution of the final exam is 60%. All exams are evaluated out of 100 points. It is obligatory to get at least 50 points from the final exam. Students who get one of the letter grades AA, BA, BB and CB from a course are considered to have succeeded in that course.
