Opening of Sociology Department within Faculty of Literature was approved in Executive Council of Higher Education dated 25/01/2012 by Rectorate of Gümüşhane University's proposal.
Our department has started to education since 2016-2017 academic year by decision taken in General Meeting of Higher Education dated 04/05/2016.
It is the mission of the sociology program to caltivate the sociological imagination, which involves the ability to understand how individual and group behaviour is shaped by society's historical development, how personal problems are connected to public issues of social structure, and how to work with others to improve social conditions.
Special mission of the sociology program is to develop the professional skills that support the sociological imagination and to practice public sociology, which applies the sociological imagination to public affairs in the form of community engagement that develops citizenship skills. Another goal of the sociology program is to promote ethical leadership by demostrating how responsible citizenship is informed by issues of social justice.
Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions. Sociology's subject matter is diverse, ranging from crime to religion, from the family to the state, from the divisions of race and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture, and from social stability to radical change in whole societies. Unifying the study of these diverse subjects of study is sociology's purpose of understanding how human action and consciousness both shape and are shaped by surrounding cultural and social structures.
Sociology provides distinctive perspectives on teh world that generate new ideas and critique or modify old ideas. Sociological research uses a range of methods, including qualitative methods such as ethnography and archival work as well as quantative methods such as statistical modeling of survey data, experiments, and network analysis. These techniques provide systematic evidence on virtually any aspect of social life, including contemporary social issues such as social and economic inequality, social movements, social media and culture, population aging, welfare or educational reform, immigration and migration, and political change.
