Microbial biotechnology

Programme overview

Main Subject

Biological Sciences

Degree

MA

Study Level

Masters

Study Mode

On Campus

The harmonised version of the microbial biotechnology speciality has a dual goal, to prepare managers for jobs in industries and services that use microorganisms or their proteins (biotechnology, Agri-food, environment, etc.), as well as careers in research and development in the biotechnology industry and public laboratories. The Master's program in Microbial Biotechnology is two years long and includes the following disciplines: 1. Fundamental biology (physiology of the bacterial cell, microorganisms of industrial interest and toxicology-pharmacology) 2. A context in engineering sciences (unit operations, fluid mechanics, bioreactors, and thermodynamics) allows for the creation of the tools required for industrial-scale bio-production. 3. Modern biotechnologies are based on genetic manipulation, the production of high-value-added molecules, and the utilization of industrial by-products (molecular approach, gene expression and molecular interactions, antimicrobial substances and valorisation of agro-industrial waste) 4. Students will have learned ideas about quality assurance, legislation, and starting businesses in the field of biotechnology (microbiological analysis and quality approach, legislation, entrepreneurship)
