The term "biotechnology" was coined by Karl Ereky in 1919 to describe the interaction between biology and technology. Biotechnology can be defined in several ways according to the FAO as the use of biological processes or living organisms for the production of materials and services beneficial to humanity.  Biotechnology involves the use of techniques that increase the economic value of plants and animals and develop micro-organisms to act in the environment.  "Biotechnology involves the scientifically based manipulation of living organisms, particularly on a genetic scale, to produce new products such as hormones, vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, etc. Microbial biotechnology is one of the different branches of biotechnology, using microorganisms (mainly bacteria and fungi) or molecules synthesised by them. Microbial biotechnology is a multidisciplinary field where science and technology coexist. The sciences covered by biotechnology include molecular biology, bacterial genetics, biochemistry, enzymology, etc. Technologies include genetic engineering, fermentations, process engineering, etc. The Microbial Biotechnology degree offered here deals with the different fundamental aspects of biotechnology and microbiology, the techniques of bio-production and purification of molecules from microorganism culture.  At the end of this Licence course, the students will be able to continue their studies in different Masters, such as "Microbial Biotechnology" at the University A/MIRA of Béjaia, or in other Masters in another university
