Biotechnology is a broad but specialist area of biology responsible for some of the most exciting developments of recent times.
The earliest biotechnologists used microorganisms to produce food products such as bread, cheese, beer and wine. Now they are responsible for food advances like precision fermentation and cultured meat, not to mention medical breakthroughs like the COVID vaccine, new Alzheimer’s drugs and gene therapies,
Situated next to the Irish Sea, Menai Strait and mountains of Eryri, (Snowdonia) your studies on this Biology with Biotechnology degree take place within easy reach of a diverse range of habitats, soil types, climate and topography, ideal for field work. Extensive facilities for practical classes include Europe’s largest underground soil laboratory, a natural history museum with various vertebrate and invertebrate specimens, our own botanical gardens and 252 hectare site for field research and the study farm at Henfaes Research Centre.
Biology covers the entirety of life on earth, and considers the interactions, dependencies, unity and diversity of its organisms. Biotechnology combines research in biology and technology to develop the breakthrough products and technologies to improve our quality of life and the health of our planet.
Our BSc (Hons) Biology with Biotechnology gives you unique insight into the ways in which biological organisms are used to create innovative new products and technologies. This includes our own cutting-edge research which ranges from finding solutions for bio-based and low carbon alternatives in manufacturing and industry to clean water, conservation, improved breeding and agricultural practices.
The University is home to the Environment Centre for Wales, a partnership with the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH), whose Welsh branch is based there. We also host the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) Wales. Elsewhere in Bangor, you’ll find regional offices for Natural Resources Wales (NRW), Dŵr Cymru/Welsh Water, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and North Wales Wildlife Trust (NWWT). Strong links with these employers provide opportunities for work placements and volunteering, and some contribute to teaching.

GCSE: Grade C/4 in English, Maths and Double Award Science, if not demonstrated by the Level 3 qualification/s.
Offers are tariff based, 112 - 136 tariff points from a Level 3 qualification e.g.:
We are happy to accept combinations of the qualifications listed above, as well as alternative Level 3 qualifications such as City & Guilds, Access and Cambridge Technical Diplomas.
We also welcome applications from mature learners.
International Candidates: International Candidates: school leaving qualifications that are equivalent to A levels/Level 3 and/or college diplomas are accepted from countries worldwide (subject to minimum English Language requirements). More information can be found on our International pages.

- A Levels: Including grade C in Biology if studying one other science subject (Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Psychology, Environment Science, Geography, Geology); or grade B in Biology if not studying another science subject. General Studies and Key Skills not normally accepted.
- International Baccalaureate Diploma (including H5 in Biology)
- BTEC National Extended Diploma: DMM - DDD including Merits in 4 Biology modules. Modules accepted include: Animal Biology; Animal Anatomy and Physiology; Animal Behaviour and Communication; Animal Breeding and Genetics; Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques; Biochemistry and Microbiology; Fundamentals of Science; Genetics and Genetic Engineering; Inheritance and Genetic Manipulation; Physiology of Human Body systems; Physiology of Human Regulation and Reproduction; Wildlife Populations, Ecology and Conservation (Other Biology-related modules considered case-by-case).
- City & Guilds Advanced Technical Extended Diploma (1080): DMM - DDD, including 4 Biology modules (Accepted Biology modules include: Animal Behaviour and Communication; Biological Systems of Animals; Wildlife and Ecology Conservation; Inheritance and Genetics; Ecological Concepts and Application; Population Surveys; Ecology and Conservation. Other Biology-related modules will be considered case by case).
- Access to HE in the Sciences Pass Required**
