This Engineering degree offers a broad multidisciplinary curriculum, combining core training in mechanical engineering and materials science with high tech digital skills. These include robotics, car design, aerospace engineering, control theory, sensing, 3d printing as well as programming. It builds on the success of our long history of education and world-leading research: our academics are at the forefront of innovations in low carbon energy, materials science, low carbon energy, powering space exploration.

Studying an engineering course means you will be able to solve complex problems. The machines, tools, devices and systems you invent will improve the world and make our lives and our surroundings better – be that health, work, home life, recreation, and more.

You’ll explore emerging technologies like digital design and artificial intelligence (AI), fusion energy and 3D printing. This is in addition to gaining fundamental knowledge of concepts and theories in materials, thermodynamics, mechanics, physics, chemistry, maths, and programming.

One of the major advantages of this BEng (Hons) Engineering is the extensive practical experience it provides. You’ll create innovative solutions in automotive engineering, aerospace, space exploration, power generation and robotic. Designing, making, and testing your own machines during the degree, you’ll get a taste of the ways in which engineers are helping to save our planet, be that enabling Net Zero and low carbon transport or reaching out into the solar system.

You’ll put into practice the theory you learn in class, in your first year you will be working with our product design team on the designing and creating process, completing group work and then undertake an individual third-year project under the supervision of a member of academic staff. In doing so, you’ll develop valuable practical and professional skills and values required of modern engineering. This including communication, teamwork, self-management, discipline, and independence, alongside an awareness of relevant ethical, legal, and social issues.

By the time you graduate, you’ll be prepared to tackle some of society’s greatest challenges, such as how to harness nuclear fusion to produce abundant low carbon energy, design the next generation of probes to enable space exploration, or understand AI and how cars work to produce practical self-driving vehicles.

Future accreditation will be sought from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Institute of Mechanical Engineering. Our ‘sister’ degrees in electronic engineering and computer systems engineering are already IET-accredited.

Admission Requirements

120+
GCSE: grade B/5 in Maths, higher tier (if Level 3 qualification does not include Maths or Science study).

Offers are tariff based, 120 - 136 tariff points from a Level 3 qualification incl.:

  • A-levels: Including a minimum grade C in Maths and a minimum grade C in Physics (we may also consider Electronics or another science in lieu of Physics. General Studies and Key Skills not normally accepted)*
  • BTEC National Extended Diploma in Engineering *: DDM-DDD
  • Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma in Engineering*: DDM-DDD
  • City & Guilds Advanced Technical Extended Diploma (1080) in Engineering*: DDM-DDD
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma: Including H5 in Maths and Physics*
  • Welsh Baccalaureate is accepted
  • Access: considered on a case-by-case basis
  • T-levels: considered on a case-by-case basis
  • EPQ: Points can include a relevant Extended Project (EPQ) but must include a minimum 2 full A-levels. Please contact us for more information.

We welcome applications from mature learners. Mature applicants and/or those with other qualifications are considered on individual merit.

International Candidates: school leaving qualifications that are equivalent to A levels/Level 3 and/or college diplomas are accepted from countries worldwide (subject to minimum English Language requirements).

*Level 3 qualifications in the following subjects will be considered for this course providing there is sufficient mathematics content: Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Aeronautical Engineering. Similar subject areas and equivalent qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
