Focusing on language, culture, behaviour, opinions, and ideas, this BA Modern Languages and Philosophy, Ethics and Religion incorporates some of the most fundamental aspects of humanity and the human experience.
With modules that explore ethics, analytical and continental philosophy, and Eastern and Western religions, you will have opportunities to debate some of the questions that have been asked for centuries. What does it mean to be human? How should we resolve moral dilemmas? Is it possible to prove that God exists?
You will learn and develop your competence in writing, speaking and comprehension in one of the languages we offer – French or Spanish. You can explore historical and cultural aspects relating to your chosen language and the communities that speak it, such as film, contemporary issues or politics.
Our Modern Languages staff have expertise in translation, film, literature, travel writing, performance, visual cultures, popular culture, socio-political change and transnational cultures. Meanwhile, the staff who teach Philosophy, Ethics and Religion specialise in diverse, often conflicting, fields of expertise, such as religious extremism, existentialism, aesthetics, and Holocaust studies. Their interests span a host of ethical approaches, from queer and feminist ethics to Asian or African ethics, consequentialism and deontology. They cover religions from around the world: Christianity, Islamic Studies, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism, Voodoo, Satanism, Paganism, and Wicca.

For all Modern Languages courses: Relevant modern language preferred. Our courses are designed to cater for those who have studied one or more languages as well as offering pathways for those beginning a language from scratch - there is no modern language language requirement for the beginner's language route.
Offers are tariff based, 104-128 tariff points from a Level 3 qualification* e.g.:
We are happy to accept combinations of the qualifications listed above, as well as alternative Level 3 qualifications such as City & Guilds, Access and Cambridge Technical Diplomas.
We also welcome applications from mature learners.
International Candidates: International Candidates: school leaving qualifications that are equivalent to A levels/Level 3 and/or college diplomas are accepted from countries worldwide (subject to minimum English Language requirements). More information can be found on our International pages.
*For a full list of accepted Level 3 qualifications, go to www.ucas.com.
**Can be considered in conjunction with grade C in A level or IB Higher in relevant modern language. No Language required for language-beginners' pathway.
