Following the revised Curriculum for Wales, our BA (Hons) Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) comprises compulsory modules designed to embed the professional competencies needed to gain QTS.

Learning theory and concepts relating to early childhood, childhood development and education, you’ll be taught by internationally renowned staff at the forefront of leading research into teaching and learning pedagogies. In each year of the degree, you are placed in a different lead school, purposefully identified for their best use and development of the Curriculum for Wales. Adding breadth and depth to your experience, this includes different age ranges and settings, urban and rural, both mainstream and special needs.

Our partner schools have well-trained mentors who will support your progress towards becoming an excellent and innovative teacher. From your class and subject mentors to network lead mentors and our own staff, you’ll be encouraged at every stage to develop skills of the highest calibre.

You will develop a thorough understanding of how children learn, together with the skills to become a creative and innovative teacher who can make a make a real difference to the lives of young people. On a comprehensive range of placements, you will be supported by experienced staff to learn how to plan appropriate schemes of work and consider assessment and reporting strategies. Capitalising on our expertise in outdoor education, not to mention our spectacular location near Eryri National Park Authority, you can even try outdoor education and forest school practice.

As a bilingual university, we are committed to developing Welsh language skills. We offer all our students the opportunity to teach through the medium of Welsh – whether you are a complete beginner or fluent seeking to improve your professional use of Welsh in an educational context. On this English medium teacher education course, you will be placed in English-speaking schools, so do not need to speak Welsh or live in Wales to apply to the course.

Admission Requirements

104+
GCSEs:

  • Grade C/Grade 4 in the GCSE examination in any of the following: English Language, English Literature, Welsh First Language, Welsh Literature;
  • Grade C/Grade 4 in the GCSE Examination in Mathematics or Mathematics-Numeracy must also be achieved;
  • GCSE Grade C/Grade 4 in Science.

Offers are tariff based, 104 - 128 tariff points from a Level 3 qualification* e.g.:

  • A Levels: General Studies and Key Skills not normally accepted
  • BTEC National Extended Diploma: DMM- DDM
  • T-levels: considered on a case-by-case basis
  • International Baccalaureate is accepted
  • Welsh Baccalaureate is accepted
  • Access to HE is accepted
  • A willingness and positive attitude towards seeking to improve personal use of the Welsh language.

We also welcome applications from mature learners.

International Candidates: International Candidates: school leaving qualifications that are equivalent to A levels/Level 3 and/or college diplomas are accepted from countries worldwide (subject to minimum English Language requirements). More information can be found on our International pages.

Additional information

Applicants are required to undergo an enhanced DBS check for the child workforce including a check of the children’s barred list. Applicants who have lived or worked outside the UK are also required to undertake a criminal records check in their countries of residence.
