Where better to study Media and Drama than at a University with its own Arts and Innovation Centre, Pontio, set in a location which regularly attracts major film and TV production companies, such as HBO, Netflix, the BBC and S4C?
You will learn about all aspects of drama, such as stage and screen, as well as diverse practices, including arts management, health and wellbeing, or creativity in education. At the same time, you can engage in the technologies and techniques found in a wide range of media – television, radio, film, computer gaming, podcasting, as well as emerging forms of media such as TikTok and AI.
Our facilities offer everything you need to unleash your creativity. In addition to its exciting entertainment programme, Pontio gives you access to a studio theatre and professionally equipped public screening spaces. As well as hosting students’ theatre production work and end-of-year cabarets and performance recitals, Pontio Cinema hosts our own media showcase and runs a range of industry events by the likes of the British Film Institute and Film Wales Network.
Taught by leading analysts, practising professionals and consultants, this Media and Drama degree prepares you for a career within media, theatre and other creative industries.
The expertise of our staff includes theatre practice, acting and performing, advertising, media regulation, privacy, digital journalism, political communication, online journalism, professional writing, comics, visual culture, gaming, virtual worlds, global media, social networks, and documentary filmmaking.
We enjoy strong links with local media production companies, including BBC Wales, S4C and independent TV companies, including Rondo Media, Cwmni Da, Darlun, Slam Media, and Aria Film Studios. We have strong links with BAFTA Cymru where our graduates in the past have won top awards. Our relationships with theatre venues include Frân Wen, Clwyd Theatre, Theatre Genedlaethol Cymru (Welsh Language National Theatre), Galeri Caernarfon, National Theatre Wales, Fevered Sleep, and many freelance practitioners.
You’ll have opportunities to gain practical experience, forging links with potential future employers in the media and creative industries. There will be opportunities to attend industry talks and workshops, recent workshops have included AI and Writing, and women's careers in publishing. We have visits to Aria Film Studios on Anglesey a tv production company and local theatre Fran Wen’s new community Hub ‘Nyth’ (NEST), which has opened for young people to develop their artistic practice further in Bangor and across Northwest Wales.
