Being a midwife is an immense privilege. You are joining a profession where you will be supporting women, pregnant people and families as they welcome new life. You will play a key part in shaping their experiences of pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood and will be supporting women, pregnant people and families through all aspects of this journey.
Validated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), our Midwifery BM (Hons) develops you as a caring, compassionate, responsible, accountable and autonomous professional. It blends wide-ranging clinical placements* with research and evidence based theory and supported clinical skills training featuring virtual technologies, which enable you to practise skills in a supported environment.
Spending half of your time on placement in North Wales, you’ll gain the confidence to lead the safe and effective care of women, pregnant people, newborns and families, whatever the circumstances. You will graduate from a University that has achieved the highest ‘Gold’ standard from Unicef’s Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) – the only midwifery undergraduate degree programme in Wales to do so – you’ll also graduate with the knowledge and skills to support infant feeding and relationship building.
From the outset, clinical skills training builds the skills required to become a professional registered midwife. Our simulation-based training equipment uses VR and lifelike manikins, including a ‘pregnant’ manikin which gives birth. This lets you safely examine ‘clients’ and interact in real-time to clinical situations based on real-life examples. It helps prepare you for the realities of working and responding to such situations, both on placement and future practice.
Clinical placements* (subject to availability) will be available in midwifery and consultant-led maternity settings. Local geography offers the possibility of placement experiences in rural and remote settings, as well as the special baby care and gynaecology wards across North Wales, including settings that span the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.
Where possible, elective placements enable you to experience more specialist settings. For example, a number of our students have visited the Liverpool Women’s Hospital, which is the largest single site maternity hospital in the UK in addition to observational placements in other countries.
Please note that in order to achieve the necessary diversity of placement experience to meet the requirements for clinical competency, you will need to travel to placements across North Wales.
Nursing and Midwifery Council registration
To work in the UK as a midwife, you must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). To do this, you first need to study an NMC-recognised degree programme, which means that you have been assessed to be a safe and competent midwife with the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills.
Bangor University’s Midwifery degree is developed and delivered with NHS partners and adheres to the NMC education standards. On graduation, you’ll be eligible to register with the NMC as a midwife.
Funding support for nursing students
Considerable financial support is available if you are considered a home student* for tuition fees (someone already living within the UK) and can commit to working in Wales for two years on graduation. You could get your tuition fees covered in full through the NHS Wales bursary scheme and claim for a £1,000 bursary contribution to living costs. A wide range of additional support, subject to eligibility, is also available for childcare, parent learners, disabled students and more.
Furthermore, as part of the Welsh Government’s commitment to develop a bilingual workforce, additional financial incentives are available if you study part of your course in Welsh. We will support you to access Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Scholarships which could award you up to £1,000 for each year of your study, depending on how many credits you study in Welsh.

GCSEs: applicants must normally have, or be working towards, a minimum of five GCSE grades A-C/9-4 including GCSE Welsh or English first language and Mathematics/Numeracy (or a recognised alternative qualification), but consideration is given to individual circumstances.
