The Master’s Programme in Linguistics (MPL), Department of Languages and Literature at Faculty of Cultural Studies was established in in response to the increasing interest in postgraduate education in the field of linguistics in Malang and the surrounding areas. The vision of the study program is “to become a master’s study programme aspiring to gain international standard through the provision of excellence in education, research, and community service in the field of linguistics, and to produce masters of linguistics who are able to participate in solving scientific and societal problem”. In 2014, this study program was accredited B in 2015 by the National Body Accreditation for Higher Education (BAN PT) which will last until December 2025. In addition, MPL is internationally accreditation by AQAS in 2023.

The study program's student body consists of domestic and international students and 6 full-time lecturers who graduated from top universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Japan. Now in its eleventh year, the MPL is striving for excellence by fostering international collaboration. In 2017, MPL set up an agreement with the University of Southern Queensland, Australia to conduct a double degree program in applied linguistics (TESOL).

In terms of research, the lecturers of the Master’s Programme in Linguistic have received national and international research grants from the Indonesian Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (Kemenristek DIKTI), SEAMEO-QITEP (South East Asia Ministry of Education Organization-Quality Improvement of Teachers and Education Personnel), and BRIN (National Research and Innovation Body).
