The Study Program of English Literature (SPEL) was established in 1999 based on The Decree of Directorate General of Higher Education No. 499/Dikti/Kep/1999. Accredited "Unggul" (Excellent) by the National Accreditation Board Decree in 2023 and International Accreditation Board AQAS in 2023, SPEL is the first undergraduate study program established in the Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya.

SPEL aims to become a leading study program that (1) conducts English-based language, literature, and culture education in a professional manner; (2) develops English-based language, literature, and cultural research, and (3) applies research results to help solve problems in society. SPEL specializes its curriculum in creative industry entrepreneurship and multiculturalism to produce graduates in the fields of creative industry entrepreneurs, young researchers and academicians.

SPEL has initiated international collaboration by sending inbound and outbound students to international activities such as summer courses, double degree program, student exchange, visiting professor and other overseas academic programs. The international classes at SPEL have been conducted since 2018 up to date in collaboration with University of Queensland (UQ), University of Southern Queensland (USQ) for double degree program, and overseas academic programs with University of Malaya (UM), Busan University of Foreign Studies (BUSF), Nanyang Technology University (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM).
