This Media and Music degree combines theory and practise, and examines the impact and influence of media and music on individuals and society.
You will learn how they can be used separately or together to communicate different meaning, feeling and emotions. As a joint honours degree student, you will take half of your modules each year in both subjects.
Media studies gives you the chance to critically examine the technologies and techniques used to engage, inform and entertain audiences via television, film, social media, advertising, AI, radio and podcasting. Staff expertise includes advertising, media regulation, privacy, political communication, professional writing, comics, visual culture, gender and race, virtual worlds, global media, social networks and documentary.
At Bangor University, making music and understanding music go hand in hand. You will be taught by world-renowned musicologists, composers and performers, who will encourage you to explore the connections between all three fundamental aspects of musical study. In music, key strengths lie in 20th and 21st century music (including popular music), music editing, Welsh music, sonic art, composition, contemporary and interactive performance.
Our extensive music facilities include two professional standard concert halls, rehearsal spaces, practice rooms, and four 24/7 electroacoustic composition and recording studios. We have a range of instruments and equipment, including a full-size organ, chamber organ, several harpsichords, harps, and four Steinway grand pianos.
We enjoy close links with leading organisations such as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Venue Cymru and Ensemble Cymru, BBC Wales, S4C, BAFTA Cymru and independent television company Cwmni Da. This presents opportunities to gain practical experience and forge links with potential future employers across the media, creative and cultural industries. In the past, our students have had opportunities to attend industry talks and workshops with directors, broadcasters and TV commissioners.
Studying within the School enables you to collaborate on different projects, such as short films, recitals and other musical productions, with students who are composers, musicians, actors, linguists and writers. There are plenty of opportunities to help organise, record, report, attend and perform in a multitude of activities within the University and other public venues such as Galeri Caernarfon and Venue Cymru.

For all Music courses the ability to read staff notation is required. Points from grade examinations are taken into consideration where appropriate, but are not normally included in the offer.
Offers are tariff based, 104 - 128 tariff points from a Level 3 qualification* e.g.:
We are happy to accept combinations of the qualifications listed above, as well as alternative Level 3 qualifications such as City & Guilds, Access and Cambridge Technical Diplomas.
We also welcome applications from mature learners.
International Candidates: International Candidates: school leaving qualifications that are equivalent to A levels/Level 3 and/or college diplomas are accepted from countries worldwide (subject to minimum English Language requirements). More information can be found on our International pages.

**Can be considered in conjunction with grade B in A level Music; or merit in the ABRSM/Trinity/LCM/Rockschool Grade 5 Theory/Grade 7 Practical; or IB Higher in Music. PLEASE NOTE: Music applicants may be asked to attend an interview, and/or offered an optional audition, should you meet the other entry requirements.

- International Baccalaureate Diploma: including grade H5 in Music**
- Access**: pass required
- Welsh Baccalaureate**: We will accept this qualification in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications
- T Levels**: T Levels in a relevant subject considered on a case-by-case basis
- Extended Project Qualification: Points can include a relevant Extended Project (EPQ) but must include a minimum 2 full A-levels, or equivalent.
