General Aims of Course

To critically assess the basic concepts in pharmacology and the pharmacological basis of therapeutics .

To introduce students to the core principles of drug action in terms of bioavailability, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and mechanism of action of drugs in the treatment of diseases .

To introduce students to critically assess drug efficacy, side effects, toxicities, drug interactions and special emphasis on dosage concerns in special populations such as the

young, pregnant women and in the elderly .

Intended learning outcomes of the course :

By the end of the course, students should be able to :

A. Knowledge and understanding: The student after completing the course should be able to :

A1. Explain how the fundamental pharmacological properties of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics influence routes of administration; drug distribution and drug levels in the body; drug efficacy and potency; potential for drug-drug interactions; drug toxicity; and the appropriate choice of drug for pharmacotherapy in a given patient .

A2. Explain how to use drug-specific and patient-specific pharmacokinetic parameters to calculate the physiochemical properties that influence rates of drug disposition and clearance in the body, and how these parameters can be used to monitor, design and modify appropriate dosing regimens of drugs in specific patient populations .

A3. Describe the process by which new drugs are discovered, developed, tested and finally approved by the Federal Drug Administration for use in the clinic .

A4. Discuss the fundamental principles of pharmacogenomics including how specific patient genotypes can influence the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics properties of a drug, thereby affecting the clinical response to particular classes of medications .

A5. Describe how pharmacogenomics approaches can be used to influence the drug discovery process and the choice of drugs in the treatment of specific diseases .

B. Intellectual Skills   After completing this course, student should have the following skills: B1. Utilize pharmacological basis of therapeutics in the proper selection and use of drugs in various disease conditions .

B2. Assess drug interactions and adverse drug reactions. B3. Rank commonly used drugs and high risk medicines. B4. Medication history taking . B5. Rational prescribing. B6. Drug dose calculation . B7. Demonstrate Prescription writing and Nondrug therapy. B8. Communication .

C. Professional Skills After completing the course, student acquires the following skills :

C1. Undertake risk assessments concerning drug-drug interaction, adverse reaction, toxicity profile and incompatibilities in different pharmaceutical preparations .

C2. Provide patients and health care professionals with advice about safe and proper use of medicine .

D. General and Transferable Skills After completing the course, student can do the following :

D1. Work effectively in a team in a variety of health care settings. D2. Acquire problem solving skills in groups for continuing professional development needs .

D3. Demonstrate critical thinking and decision making abilities in a

variety of theoretical and practical situations .

E. Attitude outcomes   E1. Risk–benefit analysis . E2. Recognizing personal limitations in knowledge .

E3. Recognition of a balanced approach to the introduction of new drugs .

Teaching and learning methods

1. Theoretical lectures

2. Lectures using Data show .

3. Seminars and presentations

4. Designing therapeutic management and discussing it with demonstrators .

Assessment methods

A. Formative assessments

1.   Draw a concept map in class to represent their understanding of a topic .

2.   Submit one or two sentences identifying the main point of a lecture .

3.   Turn in a research proposal for early feedback .

4.   Homework exercises as review for exams and class discussions .

5.   Reflections journals that are reviewed periodically during the semester .

B. Summative assessments

1.    Written exam consisting of multiple choice questions with reasoning as well as open-ended questions to assess the students’ knowledge of the drugs used in the studied diseases. The student will have to demonstrate the mastery of his knowledge and the understanding of the concepts and the evaluation is not limited to a restitution .
