The Department of Dams and Water Resources Engineering at the University of Mosul stands as one of the pioneering engineering departments in Iraq, having been established in 1967. Since its inception, the department has been at the forefront of providing high-quality education and training in the field of water resources engineering. Initially, the department focused on awarding a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree, laying a strong foundation for the future water resources engineers of Iraq. Recognizing the growing need for advanced training and specialization, the department introduced a high diploma program in 1976, further cementing its role as a leading institution in this critical field.
In 1992, the department took a significant step forward by launching a master's program, addressing the increasing demand for highly skilled professionals capable of tackling complex water resource management challenges. This program has evolved over the years to incorporate the latest advancements in water resources engineering, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet the industry's needs. The department's commitment to continuous improvement is evident in the numerous shifts and updates to its curriculum and educational approaches over the past decade.
Originally, the department followed a yearly-based system for its academic programs since its establishment. However, in the academic year 2019-2020, the department transitioned to a modular system to offer greater flexibility and depth in learning. This shift was part of an ongoing effort to enhance educational quality and align with global best practices. In 2022-2023, the curriculum was further revised to a course-based system, with students taking two courses each year. This change aimed to provide a more structured learning experience and better accommodate the diverse needs of the students.
Most recently, in the 2023-2024 academic year, the department adopted the Bologna Process, following the directives of the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. This move represents a significant milestone in the department's history, as it aligns the program with European higher education standards, promoting greater academic mobility and compatibility. The Bologna Process implementation is expected to enhance the quality of education, increase international collaboration, and improve the overall student experience.
The Department of Dams and Water Resources Engineering boasts four specialized laboratories: the Hydraulic Lab, Soil Physics Lab, Computer Lab, and Survey Lab. These facilities are essential for providing hands-on training and practical experience, complementing the theoretical knowledge imparted through coursework. Each lab is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and technology, enabling students to conduct advanced experiments and research in their respective fields.
In its pursuit of excellence, the department has recently applied for academic accreditation, marking a significant step towards achieving international recognition. This initial accreditation submission, made during the last academic year, reflects the department's dedication to meeting rigorous educational standards and continuously improving its programs. The current draft of the accreditation report has been prepared after carefully considering feedback from the Iraqi Council of Accreditation for Engineering Education, demonstrating the department's commitment to transparency and quality enhancement
