The MSc in New Media is a 1-year full time or 2-year part time taught programme that aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to adapt in the changing world characterized by continuous technological innovation affecting industries and job markets. The curriculum gives students an overview of new media from an entrepreneurial management perspective with emphasis on the business and management aspects of the technology as well as the conception, design and development of multimedia applications and content.

Programme goals:

  • to provide graduates with a broad understanding in interpersonal communication, organizational communication, computer-mediated communication, and intercultural communication theories and the application of such knowledge to the design and development of new media content, services and products;
  • to provide graduates with a good understanding of the social, economic, cultural, legal, and ethical implications of new media;
  • to prepare graduates to conduct content and audience research and apply this knowledge in designing strategic information campaigns using new media, conduct formative evaluation in the effectiveness of new media campaigns, and give goal-directed recommendations;
  • to provide graduates with a technical know-how through hands-on training in areas such as multimedia design, development and user interface design, data analytics; and
  • to enable graduates to apply creative digital applications to solve business problems in training, sales presentations, and to communicate with employees and customers.

For a Taught Master’s Programme other than the Executive Master of Business Administration (Executive M.B.A.) Programme, the applicant shall have:

  • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a bachelor’s degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class or achieving an average grade of not lower than “B”; or
  • completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.

The English Language Proficiency Requirement is as follows:

  • possess a pass grade in English in one of the following examinations: Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (AS Level), Hong Kong Higher Level Examination, CUHK Matriculation Examination, General Certificate of Education A-Level/ AS-Level; or
  • achieve Level 4 or above in the English subject of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE)  examination; or
  • have a degree from a university in Hong Kong or have taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English; or
  • submit a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), or 79 (internet-based/Home Edition); or a minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5.
