The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) at CUHK offers both M.Phil. and Ph.D. level graduate programmes, the first of its kind in Hong Kong.  The M.Phil. and Ph.D. graduate programs aim to educate and mentor outstanding young generations for careers in academia, government, and the private sector.
Research interests of the dynamic faculty of EES cover nearly all components of the Earth System, including the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, cryosphere, and the interactions among them. Research in EES aims to tackle future global challenges such as climate change, the food-energy-water nexus, natural hazards, ecosystem degradation, and planetary health. For the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) stream under the "M.Phil.-Ph.D. Programmes", the applicant shall have:

  • a master's degree from a recognized university; or
  • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or
  • graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B"; or
  • completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants should have majored in Science, Engineering or related fields.
