This programme is designed to provide both professional and academic training about journalism to people from a wide variety of background. Students graduating from universities not majoring in journalism and communication who nonetheless are interested in a career in journalism could learn the basic techniques and knowledge in the field. Working journalists and/or professionals from other occupations who need to deal with the media could benefit from the intellectual training so as to deepen their understanding of journalism.

All required courses except the Chinese News Writing and Reporting classes are taught in English, whereas elective courses are taught mostly in English or Cantonese. Students who do not understand Cantonese can complete the programme through taking the English News Writing and Reporting classes and the English-language elective courses. But understanding of spoken Cantonese would be much preferred and could broaden the choices of electives. For students who want to take the Chinese News Writing and Reporting classes, understanding of spoken Cantonese is required.

For a Taught Master’s Programme other than the Executive Master of Business Administration (Executive M.B.A.) Programme, the applicant shall have:

  • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a bachelor’s degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class or achieving an average grade of not lower than “B”; or
  • completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.

The English Language Proficiency Requirement is as follows:

  • possess a pass grade in English in one of the following examinations: Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (AS Level), Hong Kong Higher Level Examination, CUHK Matriculation Examination, General Certificate of Education A-Level/AS-Level; or
  • achieve Level 4 or above in the English subject of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE)  examination; or
  • have a degree from a university in Hong Kong or have taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English; or
  • submit a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), or 79 (internet-based/Home Edition); or a minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5.

Understanding of Cantonese is preferred.  Applicants should also submit an English personal statement of 500 words, detailing your media diet and your strategies on how to get accurate and quality information.
