The PhD programme is research-oriented. The student may be asked to take additional courses or tutorials, and will be required to present progress reports to his/her supervisor. After passing the Qualifying Examination and submitting a Research Proposal for a project requiring nine to twelve months of fieldwork, the student advances to PhD Candidate. On return from fieldwork, the student will prepare a thesis based on fieldwork research.

The goals of the PhD programme are:

  • to teach students the latest theories and methods of anthropology, covering the full range of areas addressed by social and cultural anthropology in the past and at present; and
  • to provide students with the anthropological training and guidance to carry out their own extended ethnographic research projects from start (proposal), to fieldwork and write-up, to finish (publication); and
  • to train students in producing a publishable book that demonstrates their ability in meeting international professional standards of research and analysis.

For the Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Music, Doctor of Nursing, Doctor of Psychology, Doctor of Business Administration (Chinese), Doctor of Social Science in Applied Social Science Programmes, the applicant shall have:

  • a master's degree obtained from a recognized university; or
  • a bachelor's degree, normally with Second Class Honours in the upper division or above, and have been registered in a course of study for a master's degree at this University for at least one year and have demonstrated research ability; or
  • been registered in a course of study for a doctoral degree at a recognized university for at least one year, and have been approved for admission by the Graduate Council; or
  • obtained the degrees of M.B., Ch.B., or equivalent, or under special circumstances, the degree of bachelor, for admission to programmes of the Faculty of Medicine.

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants should possess a master's degree in anthropology from CUHK or other recognized universities. Applicants with a background in fields other than anthropology may be considered for conditional admission.

Applicants are required to furnish proof of their research capability by submitting samples of writings or publications such as thesis or project reports, and a statement of purpose (2-3 pages) describing why the applicant wants to study anthropology at CUHK and what research project the applicant proposes to carry out. If relevant for research, some evidence of Chinese proficiency is also required for non-native speakers.
