The Department began offering MPhil programme in 1966 and PhD programme in 1980s, and has since provided solid philosophical training to more than 200 postgraduate students. Many of them now serving the local and international academic communities through their dedication to teaching and research.

We currently have about 30 MPhil and PhD students, who are under the supervision of our full-time professors. The diverse research interests of our faculty cover most areas of mainstream philosophy, being particularly strong in Chinese philosophy. In the past few decades, research in Anglo-American as well as Continental European philosophy has become prominent, with outstanding research outputs in the fields of phenomenology, ethics, and philosophy of mind.

MPhil and PhD Programme aim to:

  • Provide solid academic training to students in philosophy, especially in the following specialized areas: Chinese/ Eastern philosophy, Anglo-American philosophy, Continental-European philosophy and comparative philosophy.
  • Enhance student’s ability and skill to undertake rigorous independent research in specialized areas in philosophy.
  • Cultivate excellent young scholars who will serve local and overseas academic communities and other professional sectors.

For the Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Music, Doctor of Nursing, Doctor of Psychology, Doctor of Business Administration (Chinese), Doctor of Social Science in Applied Social Science Programmes, the applicant shall have:

  • a master's degree obtained from a recognized university; or
  • a bachelor's degree, normally with Second Class Honours in the upper division or above, and have been registered in a course of study for a master's degree at this University for at least one year and have demonstrated research ability; or
  • been registered in a course of study for a doctoral degree at a recognized university for at least one year, and have been approved for admission by the Graduate Council; or
  • obtained the degrees of M.B., Ch.B., or equivalent, or under special circumstances, the degree of bachelor, for admission to programmes of the Faculty of Medicine.

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants should:

  • have a MPhil degree in Philosophy or a related field from a recognized university;
  • have sufficient knowledge of general logic;
  • submit a thesis proposal of about 4 pages;
  • submit a paper (10-15 pages for English, or 10,000 - 15,000 words for Chinese) on a topic in philosophy; and
  • attend an interview (shortlisted applicants).

The thesis proposal and paper should be uploaded in the online application system and selected as "Others" for the Document type by the application deadline.
