The MA in English (Literary Studies) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong is an intensive taught programme, one year for full-time students and two years for part-time students. This programme is intended for those who have had some exposure to the study of literature written in English and who have a strong interest to attain deeper understanding of the English language and of the intellectual and artistic traditions of English-speaking cultures.

The MA degree in English Literary Studies will deepen students’ understanding of the various genres of literature as well as enhance their critical thinking skills; it will also develop their understanding of the range of structures and ideas found in the finest English-language writing. By being given opportunities to explore literature analytically as well as creatively, students can further their educational and career objectives in all fields requiring knowledge of the intricacies of the English language. The English Department has an internationally renowned Literary Studies faculty and The Chinese University of Hong Kong contains excellent facilities, including library resources.

For a Taught Master’s Programme other than the Executive Master of Business Administration (Executive M.B.A.) Programme, the applicant shall have:

  • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a bachelor’s degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class or achieving an average grade of not lower than “B”; or
  • completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants should

  • normally possess an honours degree in English or a language-related field. Applicants with a good honours degree in subjects other than English may also be considered. All applicants must satisfy the Graduate Panel that they have an adequate standard of English and have a strong interest in Literary Studies;
  • submit a 500-word statement of interests/goals;
  • submit a short writing sample (1000-1500 words), which should be a scholarly essay written on a topic related to literature.
