In 2020, the Peruvian economy registered a contraction in its GDP mainly due to the pandemic, and at a global level we had a greater recession than that registered by the financial crisis of 2009. On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the outbreak of COVID-19 as a pandemic. In Peru, as of March 2020, a set of health measures are in place that involved the suspension of multiple economic activities. As a result, GDP in 2020 fell by -11.1%. The economic activities affected were accommodation and restaurants (-50.2%), transportation, storage, mail and courier services (-26.8%), services provided to companies (-19.5%), commerce (-15.8%), construction (-14.2%), manufacturing (-13.4%), oil, gas and mineral extraction (-13.2%), other services (-8.4%) and electricity, gas and water (-6.1%). This fall was mitigated by the increase in activities such as financial services, insurance and pensions (13.2%), telecommunications and other information services (4.9%), public administration and defense (4.2%), fishing and aquaculture (2.3%), and agriculture, livestock, hunting and forestry (1.3%).
