How do ideologies shape the world we live in? What makes a society just? Can AIs really think? Studying politics and philosophy at Sussex allows you to consider these pressing global issues as well as gaining real-world experience.

This course will challenge your thinking and expand your horizons. You'll learn to think deeper about the ideas and debates that shape societies right now. From the role of religion to how we use language and the rise of populism.

You will build practical experience through:

  • integrated internship options with one of our partners in Westminster, political consultancies or the private sector
  • work-shadow political experts such as our Political Writer-in-Residence, the Times' Chief Political Correspondent Aubrey Allegretti
  • masterclasses where, amongst others, Nick Garland, former adviser and speechwriter to Chancellor Rachel Reeves, will tell you the secrets of wowing your audience
  • seeing philosophy in action in our world-leading research on Artificial Intelligence.

Outside the classroom, there are even more ways to get involved. The student-run Politics and Debating Society gives you the chance to question leading politicians like Green Party MP Siân Berry and former Conservative MP Rory Stewart.

You'll get to hear ground-breaking research via the Philosophy Society, or take the opportunity to present your own theories at the Undergraduate Research Day. You can also hear from Sussex alumni who have gone on to work in journalism, NGOs, and the private sector.

Other opportunities include exciting fieldtrips. Options include visiting Berlin where you can meet politicians in the German Bundestag and see politics in action.
