Does history repeat itself? What are the legacies of empire, war and revolution in today’s world? Should we call the current wave of populist politicians fascist? Studying history and politics at Sussex allows you to consider these pressing questions as well as gaining real-world experience.

On this course, you’ll explore how a global historical approach helps us understand and assess the political present. You’ll learn from leading researchers who shape our thinking about the past and present. Our scholars advise governments on political decisions for the future.

You can build practical experience through:

  • integrated internship options with one of our partners in Westminster, political consultancies or the private sector
  • exploring the past and present in Sussex's unique collections, such as the Mass Observation Archive and the German Jewish Family Archives
  • work-shadowing political experts such as our Political Writer-in-Residence, the Times' Chief Political Correspondent Aubrey Allegretti
  • hands-on experience in the heritage sector by pitching to a real-world brief
  • masterclasses where, amongst others, Nick Garland, former adviser and speechwriter to Chancellor Rachel Reeves, will tell you the secrets of wowing your audience.

Outside the classroom, there are even more ways to get involved. The student-run History Society and Politics and Debating Society give you the chance to publish your own journal and question leading politicians like Green Party MP Siân Berry and former Conservative MP Rory Stewart.

You can also hear from Sussex alumni who have gone on to work in journalism, NGOs, and the technology sector. Other opportunities include exciting fieldtrips. Options include visiting Berlin where you can meet politicians in the German Bundestag and see politics in action.
