At Sussex, we know Art History offers a unique lens to engage with the world. Studying for an MA in Art History with us involves in-depth and hands-on learning.
Our faculty’s expertise includes Renaissance art, contemporary photography, performance art and material culture studies. From area-specific knowledge in different fields of Art History to training in the mechanics of research, this course will equip you for a wide range of careers in creative and cultural fields.
Your passion for Art History will be nurtured through structured training to develop you as a researcher. You’ll join our energetic and supportive department. You’ll learn through interactive workshops and sessions using the rich resources held in The Keep, Brighton’s world-class centre for archives.
We also have partnerships with local and national museums and collections. These will give you access to expertise, art objects and research materials, include at:
- the V&A
- the National Portrait Gallery
- the National Trust
- Brighton Museum & Art Gallery
- Charleston, a significant home of the Bloomsbury Group
- the award-winning Towner Art Gallery.
You’ll learn from professional curators as well as leading academics with established reputations for research. This means we can offer you expert guidance as you work on your own research, relevant to academia as well as the cultural and creative sectors beyond.
On graduation, you’ll have the skills for both professional work and further study. Previous graduates have gone on to roles in prestigious institutions such as the British Museum, Soka Art Centre and the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA).
