  • Put theory into practice and apply mathematical algorithms to analyse and interpret large-data sets, developing professional skills with industry-standard software.
  • Benefit from Sussex’s wide range of paid work experiences, from summer teaching and research, to outreach roles.

Machine learning and data science are all around us. The need for people who can collate and interpret complex data has never been greater. This course will give you the skills to solve data-intensive problems.

You’ll explore the relationships between mathematics, data and statistics and gain a thorough grounding in theories and techniques. You’ll apply mathematical algorithms for the analysis, interpretation and visualisation of large data-sets, using real-world data.

In your mathematics modules you’ll learn the theory that forms the basis of modern data science. You’ll put this theory into practice in your data science modules. Our faculty are experts in this exciting field. Their research is having significant impact in areas such as:

  • artificial intelligence
  • social networks
  • infectious disease control.

You’ll develop your analytical and modelling skills, using industry-standard software such as Python and R.

By graduation you’ll have gained the skills, and confidence, to become a capable quantitative scientist. Career options include roles in:

  • the financial services
  • information and digital technology
  • research.

Our Department is a close-knit community. You’ll get to know your lecturers and their dedication and support will help you get the most from your degree. Academic advisers also support you every step of the way and you’ll have lots of opportunities to engage with potential employers. You’ll also have a dedicated careers advisor.
