  • Develop advanced analytical, data and GIS skills to understand Earth systems for careers in climate research, environmental planning or spatial analysis.
  • Explore coastlines, rivers, ecosystems and urban environments on your doorstep, using Brighton, the South Downs and coast as your living laboratory.
  • Build practical skills through field classes in the UK and abroad, with labs and small-group teaching supporting you throughout.

From climate change and conservation to geohazards and food insecurity, Geography at Sussex explores how people, places, and environments are connected, and how we can build more sustainable and equitable futures.

You’ll learn from faculty members driving real-world change. You’ll focus on the physical side of Geography, exploring themes such as climate change, geomorphology, hazards and biogeography. You’ll learn how natural processes and human activities interact across our planet, whilst having the flexibility to include human geography modules if you wish.

You will model climate impacts as well as analysing data from coastal, desert and periglacial environments. You'll also use drone and satellite technology to map land cover change and help to understand the carbon dynamics of forests.

Our campus is located between the bustling city of Brighton and the South Downs National Park, and beside the sea. We'll take advantage of this location through our fieldtrips. You’ll also get the opportunity to explore internationally through trips to destinations such as Beijing, the Mojave Desert, Marseille and Corsica or the Greek Islands.

Throughout your degree, you’ll build a powerful analytical toolkit, from data literacy and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to research design and independent fieldwork skills. You can also boost your employability through integrated work experience, digital and data accelerator programmes, and placement or study abroad years.

A Sussex Geography degree helps you make sense of the world as it is and reimagine how it could be. You’ll graduate with the skills employers demand: data literacy, green skills, and understanding of sustainability challenges. You'll be ready to pursue careers in a range of fields, including:
  • environmental protection
  • international development
  • policymaking.
