  • Graduate ready to hit the ground running in careers in publishing, writing, media, marketing, education and the broader creative industries.
  • Develop the craft, editing and storytelling skills to create original work across genres.
  • Build the confidence to shape your voice through workshops with practising writers and editors.

The world is strange, surprising and full of wonder. It is also in crisis: from climate change to social justice, imaginative minds and committed voices are needed to articulate this reality, and to forge spaces of consolation, repair or escape.

On this course, you’ll gain the imaginative resourcefulness, technical skills and confidence to turn ambitious ideas into reality. We encourage different ways of thinking, feeling, and expressing, including by respecting neurodiversity. You will:

  • expand your capacities as a creator and communicator
  • see the world around you in new ways
  • articulate your critical insights in imaginative and creative writing, in any medium.

You’ll create work that remains true to the complexity of the world and the human experience, interpreting, portraying, and understanding our amazing – if messy – lives. This degree is about finding meaning, making meaning, and leading a meaningful life.

What else do you want to do? You can join workshops with acclaimed guest writers, research in our unique archives including Virginia Woolf’s letters, publish in our creative writing journal, and print on our typography press. You might break a story for The Badger, or teach with our award winning Sussex Writes programme.

And you can do all this in one of the UK’s most creative, exuberant cities, nestled in the beautiful South Downs. We partner with the international Brighton Festival, and our Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts hosts The Coast is Queer, the UK’s largest LGBTQ+ literature festival.

You’ll graduate as an experienced writer with an understanding of pathways to publication.
