Business plays a significant role in shaping solutions to the many local, national and global developmental challenges we face today – particularly in the age of globalisation.
Based at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), you’ll examine the key elements of business operations and their growing relevance to international development. IDS is an independent research and teaching institute located on the campus of the University of Sussex, with a close affiliation with the University. All teaching staff are active researchers in development, giving you a unique learning experience grounded in real-world challenges and solutions.
You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of economic power shifts and rapid technological transformation amid global inequalities. You’ll develop the analytical and practical skills needed to understand globalisation processes and their drivers, and to participate in the formulation of policies for sustainable development. You’ll also have the opportunity to join an active community of people from around the world working on social justice.

Admission Requirements
- Degree requirements: You should normally have an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree or above.
- Subject-specific requirements: Your qualification should be in the social sciences or a related subject. You’ll also be considered for the course if you have experience or knowledge of private-sector engagement. You may also be considered for the course if you have other professional qualification or experience of equivalent standing.
- Work experience: Yes. You should preferably have one year's business- or development-related work experience.
- Candidates are required to submit an essay(s) for acceptance
