  • Graduate career-ready with bespoke support, employer-focused training and in-demand research, analytical and communication skills.
  • Gain insight into critical political and social issues, developing practical skills to make changes, with support from tutors shaping policy.
  • Gain real-world experience with our integrated internships, masterclasses from international professionals, student-run Politics and Debating Societies, and bespoke careers support.

What holds societies together? How does populist politics divide them? How can we build solidarity in diverse communities? Studying politics and sociology at Sussex allows you to consider these pressing questions as well as gaining real-world experience.

On this course, you will gain in-depth insight to how societies work, which forces drive them, and how change happens. You will explore how wealth, technology, crime and gender shape societies and politics.

Learn from academics who are experts in their field and advise NGOs and governments. You will build practical experience through:

  • integrated internship options with one of our partners in Westminster, political consultancies or the private sector
  • work-shadow political experts such as our Political Writer-in-Residence, the Times' Chief Political Correspondent Aubrey Allegretti
  • masterclasses where, amongst others, Nick Garland, former adviser and speechwriter to Chancellor Rachel Reeves, will tell you the secrets of wowing your audience
  • dealing with data and building the skills employers are looking for, for instance via our digital or video accelerator programme.

Outside the classroom, there are even more ways to get involved. The student-run Politics and Debating Society gives you the chance to question leading politicians like Green Party MP Siân Berry and former Conservative MP Rory Stewart.

You’ll get to hear ground-breaking research via the Philosophy Society, or take the opportunity to present your own theories at the Undergraduate Research Day. You can also hear from Sussex alumni who have gone on to work in journalism, NGOs, and the private sector.

Other opportunities include exciting fieldtrips. Options include visiting Berlin where you can meet politicians in the German Bundestag and see politics in action.
