In the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the study of intelligent and adaptive systems is essential. On this course, you’ll develop a strong understanding of the field through areas such as machine learning, natural language processing, robotics, consciousness and cognitive science.

By studying at Sussex, you will:

  • benefit from our unique, historic strength of interdisciplinarity between AI, cognitive science and neuroscience
  • develop a comprehensive understanding of intelligence and adaptive behaviour in both artificial and living systems
  • explore the theory and mathematical foundations of AI and machine learning
  • develop techniques for designing and implementing artificial systems in practice
  • learn from experts at the forefront of their fields.

Based within our Department of Informatics, you’ll join a thriving community of research excellence. We're home to leading research hubs including Sussex AI, the Data Science Research Group and the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science.

This course provides a strong foundation in AI, with modules in mathematics for complex systems, machine learning and adaptive systems. From there, you can choose to organise your studies around one or more subdisciplines:

  • robotics, autonomous systems and artificial life
  • machine learning and natural language processing
  • computational biology, cognitive science and consciousness science.

You’ll also refine your technical report skills through select modules and your MSc project.

When you graduate, you’ll be prepared for a career in AI and adaptive systems development. Alternatively, you may decide to pursue further study.
