Climate change and sustainability are two of the biggest global issues of our time. This course will empower you to be an advocate for sustainability. You'll learn to understand environmental challenges and the ability to develop strategic solutions to mitigate or prevent further environmental damage.

As a student, you’ll join the Department of Geography in our School of Global Studies, home to leading academics who are shaping international climate policy. You’ll take an interdisciplinary view on the scientific basis of claims of global climate change. You'll look at the human responsibility and the future implications of climate change. By studying both physical and human geography, you’ll learn about environmental management and sustainable development.

You’ll have a choice of excellent local and global field-trip destinations, giving you the opportunity to take your learning out into the field. Recent destinations have included the Mojave Desert, Los Angeles, China, Corsica and Greece. Plus our setting – within the South Downs National Park – means you’ll have the opportunity to take your learning out into the field on your doorstep.

By studying at Sussex, you will:
  • gain a deep understanding of the extent of environmental degradation and its root causes, enabling you to assess the societal, economic, and ecological impacts
  • study the intricate pathways leading to environmental damage, to identify critical points of intervention
  • be able to develop informed, evidence-based solutions to mitigate or prevent further harm
  • connect with world-leading policy-makers and practitioners.

You’ll graduate with the expertise to pursue careers in a range of climate related fields such as environmental consultancy, urban and regional planning, sustainable development, conservation, education, policy-making, and research.
