This four-year degree has been designed by leading academics and industry partners. It includes a broad range of taught modules at the University of Sussex and the University of Bristol in Year 1, followed by the research project phase in Years 2-4. You’ll have access to a broad technology base and state-of-the-art facilities at Sussex and Bristol.


As a postgraduate researcher, you’ll learn from world-leading academics, industrial collaborators and your peers. You’ll:


  • gain experience of practical application as well as a sound theoretical understanding of quantum physics
  • develop complementary skills – such as commercialisation and science communication – necessary for academic and industrial excellence
  • have the option of going on industry trips to visit companies and research laboratories working in the quantum field

  • Degree requirements: You're normally expected to have a Merit (an average of 60% overall) in a relevant Masters degree OR an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree.
  • Subject-specific requirements: The degree would normally be in physics, but degrees in cognate disciplines such as mathematical physics, computer science, engineering or materials science will also be considered.
