The Sexual Dissidence MA is an interdisciplinary course in LGBTQ+/Queer Studies. Founded in 1991, it was one of the first programmes of its kind in the world. Today, we continue to build on its history of innovation.

You’ll learn to bring a radical, contemporary, global approach to the study of sexuality. You’ll also learn to think intersectionally, exploring how the issues we encounter day to day occupy the crossroads of categories such as gender, sexuality, race, class, ability and nation.

You’ll study with engaged faculty and students, focussing on questions of identity, politics and social justice, and develop your own research on sexuality across global, historical and contemporary contexts.

Organised by the Faculty of Media, Arts and Humanities, this MA:
  • addresses contemporary and historical issues of sexuality and gender within a global context
  • provides a firm foundation in queer theory
  • allows you to tailor your studies to your interests and to connect to LGBTQ+ arts and heritage organisations and programmes.

The MA is relevant to many career directions, and our graduates go into a range of fields, including:
  • media, writing and the arts, in particular queer representation, difference and diversity
  • policy, activism and international development
  • academic research related to queer studies in a wide range of fields
  • teaching, including in higher education.
